Video: “1980″, Estelle style.

August 31, 2008

Is it…shall we say…weird…that I never knew there was a video for a huge favorite of mine, “1980″ by Estelle?

Like…in all the times I repeatedly played the song over and over and over, I never searched to see if there was a video? I find that strange lol, but nonetheless, I have since seen the errors of my ways and I LOVE the video. For the 9 people that are similarly like me and have never seen it, I give you “1980″:

Live Review: Estelle @ Bumbershoot

August 31, 2008

British singer and rapper Estelle made her Bumbershoot debut Saurday August 30th in Seattle, Washington. Her hour long set included a personal favorite “More Than Friends” (extending the end with the lovely combo of keyboard created strings and voice), “So Much Things to Say”, “Substitute Love”, “Wait A Minute” (which the crowd LOVED), “Pretty Please”, “Shine” and “American Boy”.

What is interesting to me is you never know what will happen in between songs with artists you’ve never seen live before. I recently saw Janelle Monae and I don’t think she said more than 2 words to the crowd in between songs.

Estelle on the other hand weaved a cute story throughout her set, about a boy that she met and liked, but he gave her problems. Songs such as “More Than Friends” and “Substitute Love” worked perfectly in the narrative of the story.

Estelle also showed a personal and funny side explaining the origin of the title track of her latest album “Shine”. She said she was at a personal low because she had all these bills and all her friends thought she made massive amounts of money as she had recently signed with singer John Legend’s record label. With a laugh, she said “Yeah, but I was paid in dollars…And I’m British, so I was STILL broke!”.

Audio: The Cool Kids’ “That’s Stupid The Mixtape”

August 30, 2008

A) So yeah…Apparently, I am a good 2 months behind on this, BUT better late than never, right?

B) How rare is it that the “back cover” (above, which also has the tracklisting) of an internet mixtape is just as dope as the “front”? Awesome.

Anyway, click here to check the mixtape out.

Television: Wycelf + Venus Williams = Sundance Channel’s “Iconoclasts”

August 30, 2008

Well…I posted about his ex (bandmate and girlfriend) Lauryn recently, so I guess it is Wycelf’s turn?

It appears as though Wycelf has written a new song in honor of tennis legend Venus Williams (who recently won her 3rd Olympic gold medal, winning the doubles title with sister Serena).

Called “Venus (I’m Ready)”, it can be downloaded here.

But the point of this post was to say that an episode of “Iconoclasts” with Venus and Wycelf will be airing November 13th, 2008 on the Sundance Channel. This is a unique show that “brings together two leading innovators from different fields to discuss their passions and creative processes.” I had the good fortune of seeing the one with Dave Chapelle and Dr Maya Angelou and I wish there were episodes every single day.

Previous pairings with musicians have included Alicia Keys and Ruby Dee, Eddie Vedder and Laird Hamilton and Quentin Tarantino and Fiona Apple.

The official website for the show can be found here.

Video: Solange vs a News Reporter

August 28, 2008

You know, arguments can be made for both sides, I can see that if you only are hearing audio while getting your makeup done, you’d think thenews blurbs that are being recorded for later use are actually part of your introduction, and it could make you really upset, to the point that you feel like you have to say something.

Buuuuut, considering the fact that the comments weren’t even live, and considering the fact that I don’t think it is okay to call someone “unprofessional”, even if what she thought happened was the case, because burning bridges, no matter how local the news station is, is never a good way to start out.

Anyway, I am curious as to what you guys thought? Was she wrong? Right?

Audio: Brandy’s “Porcelain Doll”

August 27, 2008

This song is weird. Interesting melody, weird freaky voices under the chorus which makes the song different (it is very Timbaland-esque, but I know this new “Human” album is being produced primarily by Rodney Jerkins, so either this is an old track or its not an all Darkchild affair), and I am such a sucker for repeated words during the chorus.

But like, the chorus is (I think) “I’m over my duffle bag…looking like a porcelain doll, no expression at all” or “I’m over my double bag (as in limit, at the airport)…looking like a porcelain doll, no expression at all”…and neither of those really work for me. Like two separate ideas thrown together on the same chorus (and yes I get that she’s talking about emotional baggage).

I suggest extending the end, when she’s saying “falll hard”, and the last note is extended. It is a really nice groove and could serve for a “FutureSex/LoveSounds”-type extension (by the way, I am still upset that “I Think She Knows” bu Justin was never turned into an entire song, that “song”, to me, was the highlight of the entire album).

Anyway, back to Brandy, like I said, I understand the point of the song, she’s dropping off emotiona; baggage and is trying to move on, but the chorus just doesn’t work for me, and I wish it did, because i find myself singing it because it is so melodically catchy.

Here.
